چکیده

Kenaf (Hibiscus Cannabinus L.) is a source of raw material for fiber-based industries and paper production in Malaysia. Normally, matured kenaf can grow up to 4.3 meters in four months and produce yields from 12 tons fibers per hectare. Based on the current management practice, kenaf plant is cultivated by stages which resulting of multi-aged plots for the same growing area. Information of kenaf growing stages is essential for a well-planned harvesting and post-harvest activities. The aim of this study is to determine kenaf growing stages by using RADARSAT-2 multi-temporal and multi-polarized images. Four multi-temporal RADARSAT-2 C-band quad-polarized SAR images were acquired for a complete cycle of life span. Ground truthing were conducted during image acquisition to correlate between backscatter value and selected growing stages parameters i.e height and age of the crops. The result of regression analysis (r 2 ) of growing stages using multi-polarization HV, VH, HH and VV are 0.85, 0.68, 0.55 and 0.31, respectively. This study shows that HV is the best polarization that able to indicate kenaf growing stages.

On the Added Value of Quad-Pol Data in a Multi-Temporal Crop Classification Framework Based on RADARSAT-2 Imagery

Polarimetric SAR images are a rich data source for crop mapping. However, quad-pol sensors have some limitations due to their complexity, increased data rate, and reduced coverage and revisit time. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the added value of quad-pol data in a multi-temporal crop classification framework based on SAR imagery. With this aim, three RADARSAT-2 scenes were a...

Analysis of Rice Growth Using Multi-Temporal Radarsat-2 Quad-Pol Sar Images

Three time series of quad-polarization RADARSAT-2 images have been acquired from transplanting to harvesting of rice crop. Ground truth data such as rice height and biomass etc. were measured during acquisition of RADARSAT-2 data in Hainan province, southern China. Among different observations, dry biomass and fresh biomass of rice crop have shown a temporal signature with a clear correlation w...

Molecular Characterization of Ferulate 5-Hydroxylase Gene from Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.)

The purpose of this study is to clone and characterize the expression pattern of a F5H gene encoding ferulate 5-hydroxylase in the phenylpropanoid pathway from kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.). Kenaf is a fast-growing dicotyledonous plant valued for its biomass. F5H, a cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenase (CYP84), is a key enzyme for syringyl lignin biosynthesis. The full length of the F5H ort...

Reproduction of Four Races of Meloidogyne incognita on Hibiscus cannabinus.

The feasibility of cultivation of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) in the United States is receiving a multifaceted evaluation. Among the factors being evaluated is kenafs susceptibility to nematodes. In this investigation, four races of Meloidogyne incognita reproduced extensively on each of the several kenaf genotypes examined in greenhouse tests. Some genotypes of kenaf, however, demonstrated lim...

Characterization of the Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) Global Transcriptome Using Illumina Paired-End Sequencing and Development of EST-SSR Markers

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is an economically important natural fiber crop grown worldwide. However, only 20 expressed tag sequences (ESTs) for kenaf are available in public databases. The aim of this study was to develop large-scale simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to lay a solid foundation for the construction of genetic linkage maps and marker-assisted breeding in kenaf. We used Illu...
